La Sept Arté « Voyage, Voyage »

I was at the very beginning of my seven-year study of the Ovahimba and other Otjiherero-speaking communities in Namibia and Angola when JBA asked me to contribute an episode to the La Sept Arté series, ‘Voyage, Voyage’.
Here is what I wrote at the time: “Travelling to the land of the Ovahimba is like stepping back into a time that no longer exists, a time that lights the way towards the Africa of the future. In the outskirts of Opuwo, capital of Kaokoland, I went to live at the rhythm of this Himba time. There, papayas are ready to be eaten before they are ripe… It’s true, I was there

J’étais au tout début de mon étude de sept ans auprès des Ovahimba et d’autres communautés de langue Otjiherero en Namibie et an Angola, quand JBA m’a demandé de contribué une épisode pour la série de La Sept Arté, « Voyage, Voyage ».
Voici que j’ai écrit à l’époque : « Voyager au pays des Ovahimba, c’est remonter dans un temps qui n’existe plus, qui éclaire la voie vers l’Afrique en devenir. Dans les faubourgs d’Opuwo, capitale du Kaokoland, je suis allée vivre au rythme de ce temps Himba. Là-bas, les papayes sont prêtes à être dégustées avant qu’elles ne soient mûres… C’est vrai, j’y étais. »
