A film about alcohol abuse in the Kunene North Region of Namibia. It was made to alert the youth of the detrimental effects of alcohol abuse. The film provides and overview of alcohol abuse amongst the Ovahimba and Ovadhimba communities in the region. A number of members of these communities deliver moving and at times amusing witnesses of the devastating and often tragic effects of alcohol abuse.
Whilst alcohol abuse is a problem in this region, with not only permanent commercial and traditional selling points in the larger and smaller urban areas but also itinerant traders selling or exchanging alcohol throughout the region, it is still limited for the most part to only a part of the population and takes place as an occasional rather than an ongoing occurrence.
The film served as an educational tool in a variety of educational and guidance applications and as such was targeted at the youth both on a regional and national level. The making of this film was an opportunity for The Ovahimba Years project to share its resources, equipment and expertise with members of the community and other partners working in the Region.
Un film sur l’abus d’alcool dans la région du Kunene Nord en Namibie. Il a été réalisé pour alerter les jeunes des effets néfastes de l’abus d’alcool. Le film fournit un aperçu de l’abus d’alcool dans les communautés Ovahimba et Ovadhimba de la région. Des membres de ces communautés livrent des témoignages émouvants et parfois amusants des effets dévastateurs et souvent tragiques de l’abus d’alcool.
Bien que l’abus d’alcool soit un problème dans cette région, avec non seulement des points de vente commerciaux et traditionnels permanents dans les grandes et petites zones urbaines, mais aussi des commerçants itinérants vendant ou échangeant de l’alcool dans toute la région, il reste généralement limité à seulement une partie de la population et se produit de manière occasionnelle plutôt que continue.
Le film a été utilisé comme outil pédagogique dans diverses applications d’éducation et d’orientation et était donc destiné aux jeunes, aux niveaux régional et national. La réalisation de ce film a été l’occasion pour le projet Les années Ovahimba de partager ses ressources, son équipement et son expertise avec les membres de la communauté et d’autres partenaires travaillant dans la région.
During the making of the film about alcohol abuse in the Kunene Region of Namibia, at Ehomba we met with Mr Jan van der Merwe, a descendant of a batman of the Dorslandtrekker, who left their worker behind in the border town of Opuwo on their trek back to Namibia and South Africa from Angola. Of SeTswana descent, he spoke perfect Afrikaans, and once the camera started rolling, he said to me: “You first brought us alcohol, tobacco and sugar to get from us what you wanted, now you come back and tell us we must stop drinking, smoking and eating sugar. But what are you giving us instead?”
Pendant le tournage du film sur l’abus d’alcool dans la région de Kunene en Namibie, nous avons rencontré à Ehomba M. Jan van der Merwe, un descendant d’un écuyer des Dorslandtrekker, qui a laissé son ouvrier dans la ville frontalière d’Opuwo lors de son voyage de retour vers la Namibie et l’Afrique du Sud en revenant de l’Angola. D’origine SeTswana, il parlait parfaitement l’afrikaans et, une fois que la caméra a commencé à tourner, il m’a dit : “Vous nous avez d’abord apporté de l’alcool, du tabac et du sucre pour obtenir de nous ce que vous vouliez, et maintenant vous revenez nous dire que nous devons arrêter de boire, de fumer et de manger du sucre. Mais que nous donnez-vous à la place ?”
