When Visitors Come – Quand les invités arrivent – Ovaryange Tji Veya is a film that explores the evolving relationship between filmmaker and ethnographer Rina Sherman and an Omuhimba family with whom she lived for seven years in Namibia and Angola, documenting their daily and ritual lives.
During her fieldwork, Sherman presented a multimedia exhibition titled The Ovahimba Years: Work in Progress at the Franco-Namibian Cultural Centre in Windhoek, Namibia, which involved the participation of a group of young people from the Etanga community. The film follows the development of this relationship, capturing the young people’s reactions to the presentation of their cultural heritage, performances during the exhibition, and the subsequent discussions upon returning to their homeland.
The film also reflects on key themes in ethnographic fieldwork, including the dynamic between observer and observed, participant-anthropology, and the role of emotion in research.
At the heart of the exhibition lies the creation of sculpted soundscapes that weave together the everyday and ceremonial sounds of Ovahimba life. The exhibition was designed as a series of interconnected environments, each offering immersive, looped soundscapes of varying durations, which meant that the sound composition of the exhibition as a whole was never twice heard in the same way. This structure mirrored the organic flow of daily life, offering each participant a unique, personal experience of Ovahimba culture through its rhythm and essence.
Un film sur la relation entre l’anthropologue, Rina Sherman et une famille Omuhimba avec qui elle a vécu pendant sept ans, filmant et photographiant leur vie quotidienne et rituelle. À mi-parcours de son séjour sur le terrain, sur invitation de l’Ambassade de France, Rina Sherman a réalisé une exposition multimédia intitulée « Les années Ovahimba : Travaux en cours » au Centre Culturel Franco-Namibien à Windhoek, Namibie. Un groupe de jeunes de la communauté de Etanga sont venus à Windhoek pour participer à l’exposition. Le film explore l’évolution de cette relation qui conduisent à l’exposition, montre le groupe de jeunes en train de découvrir la représentation de leur patrimoine culturel à l’exposition, en train de faire des performances dans le cadre du programme présenté, et montre les discussions et les conséquences résultant de l’exposition, une fois que tout le monde est de retour dans le pays Ovahimba. Quand les invités arrivent, un film sur un anthropologue in situ, évoque plusieurs notions centrales à la recherche sur le terrain, comme la nature du lien entre l’observateur et l’observé, l’observateur observé, l’anthropologie participative et de l’émotion comme vecteur possible ou entrave au travail de terrain.
